Scottish law firm MacRoberts LLP has signed up as a sponsor of the Lawscot Foundation, helping to support those from less-advantaged backgrounds pursue their legal studies. As a silver sponsor, MacRoberts will donate £2,500 which will fund a bursary for one student in each year of their studies, along with mentoring, networking and work experience opportunities.
MacRoberts is a longstanding supporter of the Lawscot Foundation, having previously participated in Lawscot Foundation events and a solicitor from the firm is a mentor through the charity, supporting, encouraging and guiding students through their legal education journey as they make the transition from school to university, and then to the workplace.
MacRoberts’ Director of People and Development, Rupa Mooker, said:
“We are aware that the legal profession can be seen as somewhat elitist and out of reach for people from less-advantaged backgrounds. MacRoberts is delighted to make this donation to the Lawscot Foundation as we want to ensure that those who have the talent to become our future lawyers get the best possible start to, and support through, their legal education and career.
“We are proud to have supported the Lawscot Foundation for many years, and we are committed to ensuring that a career in law is open to talent from all economic and social backgrounds and raising the aspirations, skills and employability of socially excluded groups and individuals.”
Lawscot Foundation spokesman Darren Kerr said: “MacRoberts and its staff have been contributing to the Lawscot Foundation’s mission for some years, so we’re grateful that they’ve stepped up that support through this donation.
“Our charity simply couldn’t exist without financial support from legal firms and individuals. This donation will cover the bursary grant for one Scottish LLB student for a year, helping a talented young person who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to pursue their studies.
“In the six years since the Lawscot Foundation was established we’ve been delighted to see the positive impact it’s had on students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to pursue their studies. Anything that supports diversity and inclusion also benefits the legal sector itself.”
